Catch more barbel!

As I’ve said before I’m really enjoying this guiding business, I meet so many wonderful people.

Sunday was rather special, Josh and his dad joined me for a day on the Kennet as part of his birthday present.

You see Josh is celebrating his sixteenth birthday today.

Happy Birthday Mate!

Up until yesterday Josh had never caught a barbel although he has caught lots of fish including very good sized carp.

The pressure was on to make sure that at sixteen Josh would be well on the way to becoming a Barbel Fisher for life……………could we deliver?

Well it was relatively slow going for a while but just before lunchtime as the dropper went in the reel burst into song and Josh found himself attached to his very first barbel.

Now this wasn’t the only first, Josh had never caught on the ‘pin and I have to say he dealt with the whole thing as though he had been doing it for years, the lad’s a complete natural!

From the landing, unhooking, resting, photos and safe return, every procedure was handled with the skill and calmness of someone you would have thought  had years of experience, it really was impressive.

We had a spell of rolling meatballs around in the weirpool and once again Josh took to it straight away although the barbel proved more elusive than the crayfish.

Back at base camp another couple of barbel made an appearance to put the seal on a truly memorable day.

Now that Josh is off and running as a Barbel Fisher I can’t wait until we meet up again in the half term holiday to see if we can improve his personal best.

So a big thank you to Josh for making it such a great day, have a brilliant birthday today and we’ll all meet up again very soon.

All the very best,
