Can’t believe that it was snowing here again yesterday and it still carpets the ground as I type!
I did manage to get down to the river for a recce and I’ll talk about that in the next update.
Talking about feeding, don’t forget the birds, must have been thirty of them at least around my feeders yesterday, now if only the barbel reacted that way when the snow is on the ground!

Steve,
I know that the snow is a bummer but it does look nice though doesnt it? Pleased to see that you are giving those birds plenty of food in these hard times for them, after my own heart..
I have always fed the birds with top food. I sometimes have 20+goldfinches on the feeders, siskins used to visit but i have not had any for about 4yrs now. Nice to watch them if you are house bound. Among other aspecs they reduce the number of flies coming into the house . Last year the sparrowhawk took a liking to our garden and it was sad to see the feathers strewn about, proud looking and regal is the hawk and he needs to eat.

We have been feeding the birds for some time now, have our own cage free aviary in the garden, hope i’m not becoming Bill Bloody Oddie !
Albert and Jeff,
Good on you keep it up summer and winter, as you say it gives so much pleasure to be able to watch them from a window especially on a snowy day, plus dont forget to break the ice on their drinking water…
Hi John,
I think we’ve all enjoyed feeding the birds during this harsh winter, they certainly appreciate it. I’ve recognised all the different Tit species, have a pair of resident woodpeckers and a Nuthatch as well as a few others. I’m constantly at the window with my Gem guide hoping to spot something rare!
Hi Albert,
Twenty Goldfinches must be a magical sight! Shame about Mr. Sparrowhawk, the law of the jungle I suppose and he knows where an easy meal can be found. I see lots of birds of prey up here in the hills but they must find enough food all around as they keep away from the gardens.
That’s a scary thought, he turned into a bit of a grumpy on that Naturewatch programme, didn’t like to lose the limelight.
I think we all become nature lovers as time goes by, helps to bring a real sense of what it’s all about.
Thats true Steve it plays a big part of being out on the riverbank for me….
Apart from Sparra’s, hoards of them, the main attraction around our feeders are Greenfinch.
Last couple of years we’ve found a few dead or dying GF’s around the garden, disease I think, people not remembering to give the feeders a good clean every fill up?
Wildlife in all it’s forms has alway’s been part of my fishing experience, 8 Whooper swans on thursday, in the field next toTrent, gave me a fly over too.
A feature coming up I think!
Hi Fred,
I could do with some of those sparrows around my way they have become very scarce around my vicinity……
