Hi Jerry,

On a river like the Severn most certainly, on the Kennet I use it more as an enticer so would not put in as much.
I'm off to the Severn on Tuesday for the rest of the season and will take enough hemp to put in a gallon a day.
If I don't put out the feed the birds soon disappear and its the same with barbel, no feed to attract, no fish in the area.
Obviously the cold temperatures have not helped us at all this year but the barbel still feed, you just have to find them.
I'm prepared to sit out quite late because experience gained over many years has shown that the barbel may not move onto the bait until very late, I'm talking 11 pm' ish!
Hemp literally goes in one end and out of the other, not entirely sure, don't think anyone is, exactly what the barbel gets out of it but it certainly attracts and holds the fish, I would feel positively naked without it!
All the best, hope you get one or two before the close, I'll post up whatever happens to me around the 16th.

steve
would you normally lay a bed of hemp even in the winter months? i,ve always been relunctant to put to much bait in during the winter, instead opting just to put a little taste out about once every hour and half, i have thought about introducing a carpet of hemp but was worried about over feeding.

I also think the "pile it in statement" need provisos attached.
It a pet subject of mine, whenever you see, "use this", "do that" statements, but no "when not too's"
It's alright giving people the benefit of common sense but we all know, some just ain't got it.

Great read Steve and all common sense approach.

As you know my concern over the "pile it in statement" did not quantify it with the differing situations you so well highlight.

The fact is, in my neck of the woods, untold damage is done to fisheries and fishing by those that relentlessly follow bad advice.

Thankfully many anglers realise this now. Still some that need educating though. It's something I know our mate Fred is keen on.
